Micro Matrix™ Upgrade for Observation ROV 

Overview 

Innova supported a survey contractor in upgrading an observation-class ROV (Argus) to enable high-performance multibeam survey operations, significantly expanding its data and integration capabilities. 

Challenge 

The main challenge was enabling high-bandwidth data transfer for multiple survey sensors on an ROV not originally designed for such capacity. This included supporting two multibeam echosounders and a navigation system, while overcoming limitations in both onboard communication and fiber optic transmission. 

Solution 

Innova delivered a MicroMatrix-based upgrade that enhanced both communication and power capabilities, featuring: 

• Three dedicated Gigabit Ethernet channels for high-speed data transfer 

• Additional serial interfaces and tailored power distribution for survey payloads 

• A replacement dual-fiber Focal slipring to overcome bandwidth limitations 

The system established a separate network for the survey payload, ensuring stable performance without impacting ROV control systems. 

Result 

A flexible and cost-efficient solution that enables advanced multibeam survey operations from a compact ROV platform—delivering high data performance, simplified integration, and reliable operation in the field.
