Untethered Subsea Load Monitoring System
We developed a fully untethered, battery-powered subsea load monitoring system to provide real-time, cable-free force measurements and enhance safety during critical lifting operations.
Category: Case studies
Overview
Innova delivered a fully untethered load monitoring system to measure and document forces in critical lifting points on a subsea lifting frame, supporting safe recovery of spools and pipelines.
Challenge
The main challenge was providing accurate, real-time load monitoring without relying on cables or ROV connections. This required a fully self-contained system with reliable power, clear data visualization, and complete operational flexibility.
Solution
Innova developed a compact, cable-free system integrating sensing, display, and power, featuring:
- Subsea load sensors integrated directly into lifting pins
- Real-time load visualization in metric tonnes via subsea displays
- Battery-powered operation eliminating external connections
- Automatic idle mode to extend operational endurance
- Continuous data logging for full post-operation verification
The untethered design allowed full independence from ROV systems during lifting operations.

Result
A flexible and reliable monitoring solution that improves safety, enhances operator awareness, and simplifies offshore operations—while providing complete, verifiable load data for post-job analysis.
